What is the Alma TED treatment for Hair Growth?
AlmaTED, developed by the renowned medical technology company Alma, is an advanced device that harnesses the power of Trans-Epidermal Delivery (TED) to promote natural hair growth and improve scalp health. This cutting-edge technology combines targeted electromagnetic pulses, acoustic sound waves, and precise algorithms to deliver therapeutic benefits for those struggling with hair shedding and loss, including conditions like alopecia areata and other forms of temporary or permanent hair thinning.

Who is a Good Candidate for Alma Hair Treatment?

Though official studies are yet to be conducted, many cancer patients, with clearance from their oncologist, find the treatment helpful before and after chemotherapy or radiation. It is non-invasive, and the TED treatment also protects and strengthens the hair follicles before their cancer treatment so they have higher chances of surviving, and there are more follicles to work with after the treatment.

How Can Sound Waves Help Hair Growth?
Alma TED uses low-frequency ultrasonic sound waves and air pressure to drive topical hair growth treatments deep into the skin through a process known as acoustic cavitation, also referred to as sonophoresis or phonophoresis. This innovative approach breaks through the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, which serves as a protective barrier. This layer is formed by a “brick and mortar” structure of corneocytes (cells) bonded together by lipids, which prevent large molecules and moisture from penetrating the skin.
The ultrasonic sound waves operate at a specific frequency, generating tiny, temporary gaseous bubbles that expand and collapse within the skin’s surface, gently disrupting this barrier and allowing active ingredients to pass through. Simultaneously, the mechanical pressure of these sound waves creates a push-pull effect that enhances the delivery of treatment compounds through the skin’s surface to reach the hair follicles below.
Through this TransEpidermal Delivery (TED) process, Alma TED significantly increases the absorption of topical hair growth treatments, enabling more active ingredients to reach the follicles, where they can promote hair strength, health, and growth. Comparing Alma TED to PRP and Other Non-Surgical Regenerative Treatments
Alma TED stands out from treatments like PRP by offering a needle-free and pain-free experience. Unlike PRP, which involves drawing blood and injecting it into the scalp, Alma TED enhances topical solution delivery through innovative microchannel technology.
Here’s how they differ:
- Treatment Method: Alma TED uses microchannels to deliver treatments deeper into the skin, while PRP involves injecting concentrated blood components directly into the scalp.
- Regenerative Benefits: PRP contains growth factors and platelets for tissue repair, collagen production, and hair growth, but it is taken from your own blood so it is highly dependent on your the quality of your own blood too. If your platelets and growth factors are not good, the PRP wouldn’t be as effective. The Alma TED serum also includes growth factors, peptides and nutrients to regenerate a healthy scalp environment, to help accelerate hair growth length and density (and color), and the retain new and existing hair follicles.
- Invasiveness: Both Alma TED and PRP are non-surgical and non-invasive. TED uses a handheld device for microchannel creation, while PRP injections involve needles, which are generally well-tolerated.
- Post-Treatment Shedding: Propecia (finasteride), Rogaine (minoxidil), red light therapy (hats or caps), platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and even hair transplant surgery causes post-treatment shedding, so you could be shedding from 2-12 weeks and as long as 5-6 months, as your weak hair is pushed out so the newer stronger hair can grow. Alma TED nourishes the hair follicles, and anchors your existing hair, making it stronger and thicker from the root. There is minimal or no initial shedding with TED treatments.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Alma TED Treatment
During your consultation, NP Linton will conduct a thorough evaluation of your scalp and hair, assessing hair density and overall scalp health to create a customized treatment plan. Your recent blood chemistry labs will also be reviewed, as certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies can contribute to hair loss. Supplementation may be recommended as part of your plan.
Preparing for Your Treatment:
Come to the appointment with a clean, dry scalp, free from any hair products, oils, sprays, or fibers. Shower and shampoo beforehand, but skip conditioner, hair dryers, or any styling products, and take extra time to rinse thoroughly. Avoid coloring your hair for one week before and after treatment.
The Alma TED Experience:
Alma TED is entirely needle-free and pain-free. During the 20-40 minutes of the treatment (longer hair takes longer to manage), you’ll feel warmth and a mild buzzing sensation on your scalp as the device works. Many patients describe the treatment as relaxing and enjoyable, making it a breakthrough option in hair restoration.
Post-Treatment Care:
Your hair may feel slightly damp at the roots afterward, but most patients leave with hair that’s nearly dry. Avoid coloring your hair for one week before and after treatment. You can wash your hair 24 hours after the session, but avoid working out, sun exposure, or anything that causes sweating for 24 hours post-treatment. Other supplemental therapies may be prescribed, like red light therapy, topical serums and/or oral supplements.
Post-Treatment Results:
Improvements are typically noticeable within a month, though at least three TED treatments spaced one month apart are recommended for optimal results. Every individual responds differently due to unique underlying conditions, but most patients experience benefits such as reduced shedding, increased hair growth, enhanced hair quality and texture, and an overall healthier-looking scalp and hair. Do you accept insurance?
No, we don’t accept insurance in this practice. Insurance also doesn’t cover hair restoration treatments.
How much is the cost of the treatments?
Treatments can be as low as $500 per treatment depending on the package picked and the number of serums used per treatment.
The TED serum is 5ml and covers about 5 credit-card-sized sections of the scalp, so that could be 1/3 or 1/4 of a person’s head. Another thing to consider is how long your hair is, as more serum tends to be wasted on the hair instead of going to the scalp when dealing with longer hair, so more serum is used. This tends to be the case with women, and also men with longer hair. However, for men with very short hair or more bald spots, we are sometimes able to use just one serum to cover the major areas. Each additional serum is $300, and you could use up to 4 serum for the whole head, although most people don’t really treat the back which is usually the last to lose hair too.
However, a minimum of 2-3 treatments are required, and some can need up to 8 or 10 monthly treatments (usually due to the age or severity of the hair loss), so packages are recommended so you can save on the treatment cost.
If you purchased a bigger package, and it turns out that you responded so well that you don’t need the rest of the package that year, the rest of the treatments in the package can be used for the “maintenance” treatments later (which could be a year later or could be 3 months later, again depending on the person’s preferences and condition, as each person is different).

What are the Contraindications for this treatment?
- Pregnancy or Nursing – this is not recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers
- Age – it is safest and most effective between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, although patients as old as 80 years old still see some results
- Somatic pain – ache, throbbing, gnawing or sharp pain in the treatment area
- Central Nervous System Disorder
- Active Thrombophlebitis – blot clots in any veins, causing pain, warmth and redness in the affected area
- Cancer – although cancer patients before and after chemotherapy or radiation find benefit in the TED treatment, it should be done with the clearance from the oncologist, and there should be no cancer or history of cancer anywhere in the head or treatment area for the past 5 years
- Active Infection Disease – If you have fungi, virus, bacteria, or parasites, in your scalp and around it, that should be treated first, before doing the TED treatment.
- Pacemaker or AICD – it is contraindicated for those with an implantable pacemaker or automatic defibrillator/cardioverter (AICD)
- Clotting Disorders – if you have a blood clotting disorder or taking blood thinning medications like Coumadin, it is not recommended for you to do this treatment
- Metal Implants – you can’t do this treatment if you have any implants in or around the head, and hearing aids or earrings should also also be taken off before the treatment
- Tuberculosis – patients with active tuberculosis shouldn’t do this treatment
- Psoriasis – if you have psoriasis in the scalp or anywhere near the head, that should be treated first, before doing this treatment
- Heart Disease – persons with heart disease (CAD, CHF, post-MI, etc.) can not do this treatment
What are the possible side effects of this treatment?
- Warming sensation – You may experience little to no discomfort during and after the Procedure, especially a heating sensation, however, there should be no pain and the warmth should dissipate within a few seconds.
- Tinnitus – You can expect some ringing sound coming from the TED device, and as such may cause some ringing in your ears, but it should also resolve in a few minutes
- Infection – Although very rare, infection is a possibility any time a Procedure is performed, even though the TED procedure is not invasive at all. Although it is even more rare, it is possible for an infection to become a blood-borne widespread infection, that is why it is very important to come with a clean scalp and no current infections or wounds.
- Allergic reactions – Although uncommon, you could possibly develop an allergic reaction to medicines applied to the treated area and you could possibly develop an allergic reaction to any medications that may be prescribed for you in conjunction with the TED treatment.
- Erythema – Redness in the treatment area is expected and it should disappear within a few minutes to a few hours.
- Bruising – Bruising in the treated area is possible, especially if, within the last ten (10) days, you have taken aspirin or aspirin‐containing products, or other medications that “thin” the blood.
- Blood clots in veins and lungs – The procedure could cause blood clots. Blood clots that travel to the heart or lungs could cause an emergency medical condition.
Does Alma TED Regrow a New Hair Follicle?
Unfortunately, no. The only way to restore hair growth to a severely depleted area is through hair transplantation.
However, Alma TED can be used in conjunction with hair transplants to help slow, stop, and reverse the progression of hair loss in non-transplanted area. It is also best to do the Alma TED on your donor area so the donor follicles will be healthier, and on the future transplant area so it will be more receptive to the new hair donations. It’s like fertilizer for your hair follicles.
There has also been evidence of sprouting of multiple hairs from adjacent hair follicles.
Is there any guarantee that this will work?
There are no guarantees in medicine. Each person is different, have different underlying conditions, and will also respond differently. It could be a lot of factors, but mostly due to age, health and nutritional deficiencies or toxicity.
We can guarantee that it will work, but not how much it will work or how fast.
We are however a Functional Medicine clinic, and we don’t just treat individual symptoms. We always try our best to get to the root causes of the issues, and in this case, the causes of your hair loss. It might cost you more money for tests and possible complementary interventions, but it will help the treatment work the best, instead of just maybe 30-70% effective because there was some underlying issue fighting against it.

Can I use stem cell products like exosomes instead of the TED serum?
Absolutely.
It is actually recommended for the worst cases, although we still can’t guarantee any results, because just like the TED serum, it still can’t regrow any dead follicles, just rejuvenate it better and faster than the TED serum. There should be a follicle there to begin with that just needs rejuvenating.
The price is also higher as different stem cell products have different prices and they’re much much more expensive than the TED serum.
