Red, watery, itchy eyes? Crusting around your eyelids when you wake up? Feeling under the weather with a cough or sore throat?
It might not just be allergies.
Across Las Vegas urgent care, providers are seeing a surge in bacterial and/or viral conjunctivitis, commonly called “eye flu” or “pink eye.” These eye flu infections are not just uncomfortable, but they’re also highly contagious, and often a symptom of larger respiratory infections currently circulating throughout the Valley, including new COVID-19 variants, avian flu (bird flu), and Hand, Mouth, and Foot Disease (HMFD).
What Is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear, protective membrane over the white of the eye and inner eyelid. It can be caused by:
- Viruses (often adenovirus, a frequent cause of “eye flu”)
- Bacteria (including staph and strep species)
- Allergens or chemicals
Common Symptoms:
- Eye redness
- Watery or thick discharge
- Crusting of eyelids and lashes
- Itching, irritation, or burning
- A gritty or sandy sensation
- Swollen eyelids
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision or trouble opening eyes
Viral conjunctivitis is often linked with respiratory illness (like the flu or COVID), while bacterial forms tend to have thicker discharge. If you’re experiencing symptoms alongside fever, fatigue, or sore throat, it’s best to get checked out.
How It Spreads And Why It’s Spiking Now
Eye flu spreads easily in crowded, indoor spaces like:
- Schools and daycare centers
- Gyms and fitness studios
- Salons and retail shops
- Offices and coworking spaces
You can get it from:
- Touching your eyes after touching contaminated surfaces
- Sharing towels, makeup, or eye drops
- Exposure to respiratory droplets (coughs, sneezes)
These same environments are now also reporting upticks in COVID, avian flu, and HMFD. All of which can cause red, irritated eyes as early warning signs.
Do’s and Don’ts For Eye Flu Prevention Tips
Here’s what you should (and shouldn’t) do if you think you have or are trying to avoid conjunctivitis:
DO:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water
- Wear dark sunglasses or goggles to reduce irritation and keep you from touching your eyes
- Use a warm, wet cloth to clean crusting in the morning
- Change pillowcases and linens often
- Use prescribed antibiotic or antiviral eye drops as directed
DON’T:
- Rub or scratch your eyes
- Share towels, cosmetics, eye drops, or bedding
- Use over-the-counter meds without consulting a provider
- Wear contact lenses until symptoms fully resolve
- Visit public spaces if your eyes are infected
