Near-Infrared Light Therapy for Neck Pain in Las Vegas

Near-infrared therapy for neck pain in Las Vegas

Neck pain can make an ordinary workday feel long. Turning to check traffic, looking down at your phone, or settling into bed may keep bringing your attention back to the same sore area. If stretching and temporary relief have not helped enough, it is reasonable to ask what else might fit your care.

Near-infrared light therapy is one option studied for some types of neck pain. It may help some people manage symptoms, but the evidence is mixed, and the treatment should follow an assessment of what is causing your pain. At Long Life Med, that conversation comes before choosing a device or a session schedule.

Why the cause of your neck pain matters

Neck pain can involve muscles, joints, discs, or nerves. A stiff neck after prolonged desk work is not the same problem as pain accompanied by arm weakness. Treating every sore neck with the same light exposure overlooks those differences.

Bring a description of where the pain starts, whether it travels, how long it has been present, and which movements make it worse. Your sleep, work setup, activity, previous injuries, and current medications also help your provider understand the pattern. Testing or referral depends on the findings rather than an automatic scan for every patient.

Get prompt medical assessment for new arm numbness or weakness, worsening balance, or pain after an injury. Fever with a severe headache and stiff neck, or neck discomfort with symptoms of a heart attack, needs emergency care. MedlinePlus explains the warning signs. Do not wait for a light-therapy appointment when urgent symptoms are present.

What near-infrared therapy does—and what studies actually show

Near-infrared, or NIR, is invisible light. Visible red light and NIR can both be used in photobiomodulation, often shortened to PBM. Research examines whether particular light exposures influence cellular activity and pain-related processes; PBM is different from using heat alone.

There is a reason this treatment attracts interest. A 2009 review of randomized trials reported pain relief with low-level laser therapy in selected neck-pain populations. That finding supports a discussion, but it does not establish that every NIR device will help every neck condition.

More recent findings show the limits. In a 2024 sham-controlled trial, PBM alone did not improve the primary measure of pain at rest compared with the other groups. A 2026 randomized trial found no additional benefit from adding its infrared-laser protocol to a program of exercise and manual therapy.

These studies used specific treatment sites, devices, and doses. Results from a targeted laser cannot simply be transferred to a whole-body bed or cocoon. Nor do they show that light corrects a compressed nerve or repairs a damaged disc. A reasonable goal is possible symptom support, with a clear plan to check whether it helps you.

Why the device and dose need a plan

A longer session is not automatically a better session. Wavelength, power reaching the skin, energy per area, distance, treatment location, and frequency all affect exposure. Clothing and other barriers can also change how light reaches the intended area.

Long Life Med offers customized whole-body PBM options, including an open bed and cocoon devices. Our medical red light and NIR therapy page explains the service. NP David can discuss whether the available equipment is appropriate for your symptoms rather than assuming a published laser protocol is the same as our session.

Follow the selected device’s eye-protection and positioning instructions. Tell your provider about medications, light sensitivity, skin conditions, and relevant medical history before treatment. The initial schedule and any maintenance sessions should be individualized; do not copy daily-use instructions from an unrelated device or online testimonial.

Put light therapy alongside a plan for daily function

Pain relief matters, but so does what you can do comfortably. Agree on a few practical measures before starting: turning your head, completing a workday, sleeping, or tolerating an appropriate exercise program. Revisit those measures rather than judging the treatment only by how a session feels.

Our functional medicine approach starts with your history, lifestyle, diet, sleep, and a review of medications and supplements. For neck pain, your plan may also involve activity changes, rehabilitation, or referral when appropriate. Light therapy should support that work, not displace it.

We cap our patient roster at 300 so there is room for extended conversations with NP David. That time allows you to ask what is known, what remains uncertain, and when to reconsider an approach that is not improving your function.

Questions about NIR therapy for neck pain

Can near-infrared light cure neck pain?

No cure can be promised. Some studies report pain relief, while others show little or no added benefit. The cause of the pain and the treatment protocol both matter.

Is NIR the same as a heating pad?

No. PBM uses defined light exposures, whereas a heating pad delivers heat. A sensation of warmth does not tell you whether you received an appropriate PBM dose.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no universal number. Your provider should explain the proposed trial of treatment, how progress will be checked, and when to change or stop the plan if it is not helping.

Can I stop my neck exercises or medication?

Do not change prescribed treatment on your own. Discuss how light therapy would fit with rehabilitation or medication, and make any changes with the clinician managing your care.
